STANLEY HOUSE THROUGH THE AGES.

HISTORY

Stanley House was built in the late 1800's for the Falkland Islands Company, for the residence of their Colonial Manager.  It is a large brick house situated on Ross Road to the south of Victory Green.  When it was built it was the second largest house in Stanley, the largest being Government House.

From 1975 until April 1977 it was used to house Johnson Construction Limited personnel whilst the new Stanley Airport was being built.  During 1981 the house and surrounding grounds were purchased from the F.I.C. by the Falkland Islands Government, for use as a boarding house for Camp children attending school in Stanley.  Whilst all the children had their meals at the house, only the boys slept in it in rather cramped conditions upstairs.  The girls slept in a house on Racecourse Road.

Following the Argentine invasion of the Falklands on 2nd April 1982, the boarders were permitted by the invaders to return to their homes in Camp.  The Argentine Forces then occupied the house and grounds as their Command Post.  Anti-aircraft guns were positioned on the front lawn to cover the area across the harbour and several dugouts were built in the grounds.  After the Liberation by British Forces on 14th June 1982, the First Battalion of the Queen's Own Highlander's used the house as their Headquarters.

In March 1983 the house was re-opened as a boarding hostel.  This time the girls slept in the building on the first floor, together with live-in staff and the boys slept in six mobile homes situated on the old tennis court in the grounds to the east of the main house.  The ground floor was used as a dining and recreational area.

During 1984-85 two dormitory blocks were constructed in the grounds to the south of the main house by L.M.A.  HRH Prince Andrew officially opened the dormitories on the 11th May 1988.  The blocks were named Sir Rex Hunt House and Lady Hunt House for the boys and girls respectively.  Since January 1992, it was decided to house all the younger children in Sir Rex and the over 14's in Lady Hunt House.  Girls occupy the top floors and the boys the ground floors in both blocks.  A live-in Houseparent occupies a flat on each of the four dormitory floors.  Stanley House is now used as a dining and recreational area only.
